Hello, all, and welcome back to The Friendly Film Fan! Just yesterday, I revealed and solidified my final predictions for the 2020 Oscar nominations, which were announced this morning at 8:00. As expected, I was wrong about some, right about others (even went 100% on some categories, such as Supporting Actor and Best Picture), surprised by some nominations, and upset by some absences, but overall, this set of nominees isn’t too far off from where I was expecting them to go. Apollo 11 marks the largest snub by the Academy, as many were expecting it to win the Documentary Feature Oscar come ceremony night, and Klaus comes out of almost nowhere as the biggest surprise of the whole proceeding to steal the spot from Disney-backed sequel Frozen II in the Best Animated Feature category. Other than these, there weren’t many surprises, although a few letdowns were in order: both Jennifer Lopez and Zhao Shuzhen missed out on Supporting Actress (in fact, The Farewell got no nominations at all), with those spots going to Kathy Bates and Scarlett Johansson instead, Greta Gerwig and Taika Waititi fall to Todd Phillips in Best Director (not surprising, but still a bit disappointing), Taron Egerton and Lupita Nyong’o’s SAG momentum could not secure them nominations, and both Rocketman and Dolemite Is My Name missed out on the Costume Design and Makeup categories. It will sure be an Oscars to watch this year, though, despite any letdowns or snubs, as the momentum around the Best Picture and Director categories has shifted dramatically over the past couple of months (even the last couple of days), with 1917 now in the lead to take the win for both, but with The Irishman and Parasite right on its tail. We’ll certainly have a tough job predicting some of these come February 9th, but for now, let’s let that alone for a bit. Here are your official nominees for the 92nd Annual Academy Awards, a.k.a. the 2020 Oscars! Best Picture:
What are your reactions to these nominations? Do you see any major snubs here? Any pleasant surprises? Let me know in the comments section below! Thanks for reading, and keep an eye out for more Oscar coverage and new movie lists (Best and Worst are around the corner!), coming very soon!
